Liquid Membrane Waterproofing Melbourne

Water damage is one of the most expensive repairs a property owner ever deals with. The frustrating part? Most of it is preventable with proper liquid membrane waterproofing in Melbourne. At Complete Construction Service, we have been applying liquid membrane waterproofing across Melbourne for over 15 years.

Protecting bathrooms, balconies and laundries with seamless, flexible systems that comply with AS 4654.2:2012 and AS 3740. Every job comes with a 10-year waterproofing warranty certificate.

The system explained

What Is Liquid Membrane Waterproofing?

Here is the problem with most waterproofing systems — they rely on sheets, laps and seams. Every join is a risk. Over time, with temperature changes and building movement, those joins are exactly where things start to go wrong. Liquid membrane waterproofing works differently. We apply it as a liquid, either by brush, roller or spray, and cures into one continuous, elastomeric layer with no joins at all. It bonds directly to the substrate and flexes with the building as it moves. In Melbourne, where temperatures can swing hard between seasons, that flexibility matters. It covers internal wet areas under AS/NZS 4858 and external areas under AS 4654.2.

Is Liquid Membrane Waterproofing Required in Melbourne?

Yes, and it has been legal requirement for a long time. According to the National Construction Code (NCC) and AS 4654.2-2012, every wet area in a residential building needs professional waterproofing before tiling starts. Each wet areas like bathrooms, showers, balconies, laundries and other.

And it matters more than people think. Waterproofing accounts for roughly 1.8% of a typical build cost. But failed waterproofing is behind up to 83% of all building defect claims in Australia. That gap tells you everything. A bad membrane does not just cause a leak, it creates structural damage, insurance disputes and legal headaches that cost far more to sort out than the original job would have.

why it works

Why Most Melbourne Waterproofers Use Liquid Membrane

We keep things simple. You tell us what you need, we look at the job, give you a straight quote, and then we do the work properly. Here’s how our construction services in Melbourne are delivered from start to finish.

No joins, seams and no weak spots.

Every join in torch on membrane can be a risk. Liquid membrane has none. Just one solid and continuous layer with no edges to lift and nothing to fail at the seams.

It moves without cracking

Good liquid membranes stretch up to 400% of their length before failing. Melbourne buildings expand in summer and contract in winter. A membrane that cannot move with that will eventually crack.

It reaches the hard spots

Inside corners, around drain outlets, over pipe penetrations these are the areas sheet systems can struggle to cover reliably. Liquid membrane coats them completely, which is why it works so well in wet areas.

It is compliant out of the box

Every system we install meets AS 3740 and AS/NZS 4858. You get the paperwork you need for council, insurance and resale. No chasing certificates after the fact.

It does not slow your job down

Dry times between coats are short. Most installations are done in a day, which means the tiler can follow quickly and your project keeps moving.

Waterproofing + tiling together

We handle both trades. When the same team does the waterproofing and the tiling, there is no gap between trades — no missed upstands, no miscommunication.
Where we work

Where We Apply Liquid Membrane Waterproofing in Melbourne

Select an application area to see how we approach each one.

Bathrooms and Showers

The most common job we do. We waterproof shower floors, walls, bath surrounds and full bathroom floors before tiling according to AS 4654.2:2012. We follow the same process. Whether it is a renovation in Hawthorn, a new build in Doncaster or a leaking shower recess in St Kilda? Substrate prep done properly, reinforcement at every junction, two full coats minimum, and also a flood test before tiling begins.

Balconies and Decks

When balcony waterproofing fails in Melbourne, the damage rarely stays on the balcony. It moves through the slab and into the ceiling of whatever is below. We apply trafficable-grade liquid membranes to balcony slabs before tiling, covering all upstands, junctions and penetrations properly — because that is what stops the water tracking through.

Laundries and Wet Rooms

Laundries need full floor waterproofing and partial wall coverage under AS 4654.2. We treat them the same way we treat a bathroom — substrate prep, fabric reinforcement tape at all junctions, two full coats, and a flood test before anything else goes in.

Pools and Water Features

Pool-grade liquid membranes handle constant water immersion, chemical exposure and ground movement. We use them on pool shells, surrounds and water features where hydrostatic pressure is an ongoing concern.

Remediation — fixing what failed

If your existing waterproofing has given up, we assess it first. Sometimes an over-coat with a compatible liquid membrane is enough. Other times a full strip-out is the only reliable fix. We tell you which one honestly, before we quote.

How we do it

How We Apply Liquid Membrane Waterproofing

Each membrane application follows the same five steps. There are no shortcuts worth taking.

01

Site Inspection

We check the substrate, drainage falls and any existing waterproofing before a drop of membrane goes down. If something is not right, we flag it upfront.
02

Surface Preparation

The substrate is cleaned, primed and any cracks or low spots are repaired. On remedial jobs, a screed layer is often applied first to give the membrane a clean base to bond to.
03

Reinforcement

Fabric tape goes into the first coat at every wall-to-floor junction, corner and pipe penetration. These spots are where waterproofing fail first without it.
04

Membrane Coats

Minimum two full coats, applied at right angles, hitting the dry film thickness (DFT) required by the manufacturer and AS 3740.
05

Flood Test

Water sits on the finished membrane for 24 hours. If it passes, we tile. If it does not, we fix it before anything goes over it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is liquid membrane waterproofing?

It is a polymer-modified coating that goes on as a liquid and cures into a seamless, flexible, fully bonded waterproof layer. Used in bathrooms, balconies, laundries and pools to stop water getting into the structure below. The main difference from sheet membranes is there are no joins and joins are where most waterproofing fails.

Is it legally required in Melbourne?

Yes. The National Construction Code and AS 3740-2010 both require wet areas in residential buildings to be professionally waterproofed before tiling. That covers balconies, showers, bathrooms and laundries. It is not optional so skipping it puts your insurance cover, building warranty and resale value at risk.

How many coats does AS 3740 require?

A minimum of two full coats, applied at right angles to each other to reach the required dry film thickness (DFT). Junctions, corners and pipe penetrations also need fabric reinforcement tape embedded in the first coat before the second is applied.

How long does liquid membrane waterproofing last?

A properly installed system in Melbourne will typically last 10 to 25 years. It depends on the product, whether it is tile-protected, UV exposure and how well it was put down in the first place. Exposed membranes on balconies are worth a check after 10 years.

How long do I need to wait before tiling?

Most products need 24 to 48 hours to cure before tiling can start. We always run a 24-hour flood test after the final coat anyway as required by AS 3740. Tiling does not begin until the membrane has passed. That is not negotiable.

How much does liquid membrane waterproofing cost in Melbourne?

A standard bathroom (8–12 m²) usually runs $400 to $900. A balcony (15–25 m²) is typically $600 to $1,500 or more, depending on substrate condition, access and what the system needs. There is no reliable way to quote without seeing the job — call 0414 060 534 and we will come out for a free assessment.

What is the difference between liquid membrane and torch-on membrane?

Liquid membrane is applied by brush, roller or spray and suits bathrooms, wet areas, balconies and pools. Torch-on is a bituminous sheet bonded by heat. It is better for flat roofs, podium decks and below-ground structures. Both are good systems. The application decides which one belongs there.

Does the membrane need a flood test when it is finished?

Yes. It is required under AS 3740 and we do it on every single job. Water is ponded on the finished surface for 24 hours. If there is any sign of leakage, we fix it before anything goes over it. This step does not get skipped.

Can liquid membrane go over existing waterproofing?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It comes down to the condition of what is already there. A membrane that is still fully bonded and compatible with the new product can be over-coated. One that is lifting or blistering cannot be saved that way. We assess it honestly and tell you which one is needed.
